Robotics team wins bronze

Robocup 2017: The Solidus robotics team has once again achieved a top-three position. In Japan, the Swiss students demonstrated what intelligent robots are capable of today.

Every year, the best young robotics developers get together at the Robocup. During the competition, students from universities and universities of applied sciences from all around the world compete with each other with their robots. Team Solidus from the Higher College of Technology Mittelland (HFTM) in Biel, Switzerland, has been participating in the Robocup since 2014.

This year, at the end of July, the world championships of intelligent robots took place in Nagoya, Japan. In the logistics discipline, the Swiss robots achieved third place, coming in ahead of a strong field of international contenders. In 2015 and 2016, Team Solidus achieved second place at the Robocup. This is already the third year in succession that the young Swiss developers have achieved a place under the top three international robotics teams.

Approximately 3000 participants from 42 countries took part in the Robocup 2017 in Japan. In the five disciplines football, rescue robots, industry, junior, and logistics, young developers demonstrated what robots are capable of today. The logistical discipline, the “Logistics League” has been a part of the Robocup since 2012. This is the discipline where the Swiss Team Solidus has achieved its successes to date.

The conditions of the competition in the “Logistics League” require the simulation of a manufacturing environment that is as close as possible to real-life industrial conditions. One of the tasks is to control three robots, in order to make them work together to manufacture special products. The robots have to plan, execute, and optimize the production process. The aim is for the robots to deliver a finished product. Every year, Team Solidus is made up of students from the system technology study program at the HFTM.
